What Your BMI Means
BMI Reference Chart for Women & Men
The standard adult BMI formula and category cutoffs are the same for adult women and men. Individual health risk can still differ based on age, muscle mass, body composition, waist measurements, medical history, and other factors.
| BMI | Category | Educational Note |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | May warrant nutrition or medical review depending on the individual. |
| 18.5–24.9 | Normal weight | Standard adult reference range. |
| 25.0–29.9 | Overweight | A provider may review other metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors. |
| 30.0–34.9 | Obesity Class 1 | Medical weight-management options may be discussed when appropriate. |
| 35.0–39.9 | Obesity Class 2 | Comprehensive weight-management evaluation may be appropriate. |
| 40.0+ | Obesity Class 3 | Provider-guided obesity treatment evaluation may be appropriate. |
Could Your BMI Be a Reason to Talk With a Weight Loss Provider?
BMI can be one part of a medical weight-management evaluation. Depending on the medication, diagnosis, medical history, and provider assessment, some adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with certain weight-related conditions, may be evaluated for prescription weight-management treatment when clinically appropriate.
BMI alone does not determine whether a medication is appropriate. A licensed healthcare provider should review your medical history, current medications, contraindications, health goals, and other relevant factors.
